Well,

After sponging a lot of knowledge from this forum I decided to tackle the restoration of my 1995 Larson 214 LXi. I have had the boat since new. This will be the second floor replacement for the boat. I know its too young to require another floor, but when it was just a few years old the dealer left it sitting uncovered in the elements for the winter while I had it in for warranty work. I took notice (after driving by and seeing it filled with water), and Larson paid to have it replaced. Long story short, the replacement was not done correctly - tough to see when its covered by carpet.

So, here are my objectives:

1. No more wood in the boat! I can't go through this again. I purchased several sheets of Coosa Composites Bluewater 20 for the flooring. I plan on Nidabond pourable stringers and bulkheads.

2. No glue-down carpet. Even if there is no wood, it can start to smell. I plan on a smooth finished gel coat interior with snap-in Deckadence marine flooring.

4. Factory restored vinyl. I already have a jump on this. Had copycat covers make a new sundeck cover (very reasonable), and I dyed the remaining vinyl with a colormatched dye. I am very please with both the sundeck vinyl and the pieces I dyed - all look factory brand new.

5. Exterior gelcoat refinish - should look fine after removal of oxidation.

Started the demolition last Monday. I got maybe half the deck and foam removed. The foam was saturated. I filled up 5 trashbags full of the stuff. Found the best way to remove large pieces of foam is with a shovel (really). The strigers were removed with a spoon since they are essentially dirt. It seems the entire deck has been supported by just the foam flotation. The more I work on it the more disgusted I am with the previous repair work.

I'll try to post some pics up of the highs (vinyl) and lows (stringers) so far.

Thanks!

Ben

Here are a few pics of the vinyl I reworked. Had a local shop color match some vinyl dye. The dye is about $35/pint, but the color matching was another $25. I have three colors so will have about $215 in it (4 pints). Thats enough for the entire boat. I sprayed one cusion using a $5 preval disposable sprayer, and others I did with a hvlp touch-up gun. Both came out perfect.

Here is a before pic. This was scrubbed with every chemical known to man and still couldn't get clean. Note the purple pvc stains from the blue tarp I used to cover the boat one winter (never again):

Here is an after. My camera skills are not great but I assure you it now looks brand new (and factory color):). note there are three colors plus the gold piping:

And another of the finished product:

Toughest part of the process is taping for the different colors.

Here is the old sundeck (ripped and faded worse than the pic shows):

Here is the new one made by copycat covers. They do great work (no, I'm not affiliated with them - just a happy customer).

Hopefully I can "shovel" the rest of the foam out this weekend.

hey Ben, welcome to Iboats! The vinyl looks great from your shots! How about a couple of your demo? Good luck with the project, sounds like you are off to a great start!

Well, here is some of the demo. I found the easiest way to remove the foam was with a bull-nosed shovel. Foam was soaked. Removed 8 garbage bags full.

Its just sick how rotted the stringers and bulheads are:

This is strange - note the old ply at the perimeter sits off the hull by means of foam:

I am guessing I have two more days of "destruction" and a day of grinding before I can start "construction." I am looking forward to actually feeling like I'm making progress.

Almost finished with the demo. Foam was obviously the only think supporting the deck. Guess I'll be grinding next week. By the way, I HATE FIBERGLASS!

Here are a few pics:

This is interesting. OEM glassed in a vertical 2x2 - this will temporarily remain as an elevation reference point:

And a few more:

Finally feeling like I'm making progress.

benjh1028,
Nice work so far. Making some great progress on the tear down. It's amazing how poorly OEMs put these things together, and how poorly PO's have taken care of them.
The vinyl really came out nice too.
Great Job.

That is a nice looking boat.. You might have to pull that engine.

Coming along well! Are you planning on putting in new stringers right up to where the deck for the open bow starts? That's about as far as you can go without pulling the cap off, which opens up a whole other can of worms.

Also, you and I are basically doing the same job on the same year and sized boat, just diff manufacture. Your bilge looks a lot different than mine, much more exposed wood it seems. How is that wood? Or will all of that come out too?

Transom seem ok?

Ben..haven't heard from you in a while, hows the boat coming?

Unfortunately been traveling a lot. In just the past 3 weeks I've been in Amsterdam, Zurich, London and Brussels. Having two young kids in sports doesn't help with time either.

I'm going to form up the stringers this weekend with pink foam and glass (see Micks). Nidabond should be here by next week - should be pouring in 2 weeks.

Also, waiting to see how your gelcoat deck goes! You spraying or tip/roll? I'm nervous about this part.

Wow..whats going on over there??

I'll look forward to seeing your progress! I'm on the hunt for a stearing wheel like yours...I think the wood grain really looks nice. My boat also had an option for wood grain around the gauges and a stripe on the glove box..I'd like to find those as well.

Yea, I've been looking forward to laying the Gel Coat down. Today I got the seat pedestal in for the new captains chair(I'll update some pics in my thread) and I glassed in the wood base for it tonight. Really turned out good, and I avoided having to put screws through my deck. Gel-Coat will go down tomorrow!

Take Care...

I am interested to hear about the Nida-bond. I am considering this as well for my boat. How expensive is it? What style are you using?

I am interested to hear how it goes.

Thanks!
