I'm looking at a boat with a 1995 Mariner 40 hp 4 cylinder motor. In know nothing about these motors. The online research I've done points to this being either a Yamaha or Mercury based product. Is that so? If so, which is it?

Is this considered a good platform?

What about parts availability?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Bosunsmate,

Thanks for the reply.

My past experience is exclusively with OMC products, so I'm trying to educate myself on Merc.

Anything to watch out for with this particular unit? ('95 40hp/4 cyl)

Would you recommend buying one? If so, why or why not?

Again, thanks in advance.

One more question: How's the fuel efficiency of the 4 cylinder?

I have a 1994 & have had no problems other than the rectifier that I knew was bad when I bought it. Check compression & look motor over for missing paint from bolt heads to see what has been worked on. Mine is a fresh water motor and looks like new under the cowling. Check that you hear a beep when you turn the key on (oil and temp alarms). No problem getting parts.
