1995 Merc 40hp

I just bought a boat with this motor on it and the motor idles fine but when you give it gas it bogs down and dies. I have been able to get it running if I give it some gas and pump the ball. It will then take off and run fine. Dirty Carbs? or something else?

Most likely carbs.

Is there something I can do other than tear them down and rebuild them?

Not if they are varnished. Some people try running engine tuner through the carbs, but that doesnt usually get the jets cleaned thoroughly.

"It will then take off and run fine." For how long?<br />Check your fuel pump too.
