I have a '95 Merc 9.9HP that I want to put a new impeller in. I have changed impellers on other engines but cannot find how to disconnect the shifting linkage on this 9.9 to be able to slide the lower unit off. I have removed the 3 bolts holding the LU on and it will slip off about an inch.
Need it to come all the way off. Any advice is appreciated.
thanx, SaltyKayak

You'll see where the mechanism turns and lifts the shift shaft just under where the carb bolts on. On the port side, there's a latch that swings out with a pin attached that pulls out once unlatched. There will also be a washer on the shaft that rests on a couple of dimples to activate the tilt lock. You'll need to make sure that washer is there when you slide it back on.

Yes. Once you get the electric starter off, you'll see it.

Yep, got it and it's off. Took apart the impeller housing and all lookes satisfactory but when I lifted the impeller assembly from the lower unit, the water hole was plugged with mud and that is why no water was getting up to the motor.

thanx for the info. I appreciate it.
