1995 Mercury 6hp no reverse.

Hi All,

I have a new to me 6hp. It will allow me to shift into reverse intermittently. It seems part of the linkage hits the pull cord gear but if I spin the prop it will then allow me to shift into reverse. I checked through the service manual but not really sure if anyone has seen anything like this?

How does it shift when it is.running.

When it was running it ran pretty well. Kind of feel silly for not trying it again before posting. The one weird instance out when i was on the water was the piece in the picture i am pointing at got stuck against the pullstring gear once and i had to open the engine up and manual move it out of the way for my pull string to work. I've looked through the parts diagrams but cannot find the name of this piece. Not sure if maybe it just needs to be greased or if this is part of the problem.
