I recently bought a new to me 1995 Mercury 4 STROKE 9.9 outboard and I am having a really difficult time getting it started. Yesterday i put it in some water, hooked up the gas, and started pulling. After about 15 minutes with no luck, my arms were done, so I went inside to search iBoats for answers. About 30 minutes later, I went back out to try again, and within 10 pulls it fired up and ran like a top. I killed it, and it started on half a pull. What is the deal with this? This happens every time I try to start it up. It's really frustrating when trying to fish!

I'm not a mechanic but if it was mine I'd put sea foam in the gas the first thing. When trying to start when cold I'd choke it and when I first thought it was trying to start I'd take it off choke and put it on run, pull until it started. Hopefully the sea foam will cure the carb or injector problem you might have. Just a guess!

I've never used Sea Foam, is it a carb cleaner that you add to the gas? But the motor has no choke, at least not an easily adjustable one. It has an auto-choke on it, so i cant really adjust it easily. I know there is a screw in there somewhere, but I cant pinpoint exactly where that is.

I would try to give a little more information so these guys that know will have more to go on. One thing that might be important. Did the previous owner tell you when the last time it was used. I wouldn't be messing with any adjustments. Sea Foam can be purchased at WalMart Auto Zone etc. Good stuff!
