Hello,
1st boat purchase, found it on ebay. It runs good, and is basically is good shape except the previous owner cut out the floor over the gas tank, and covered it with a piece of ~22 in. x 44 x .5 inch treated plywood. Aside from looking like crap, it is showing signs of rot. The cutting like it was done fairly carefully, the surrounding floor isnt soft and i'm thinking i just want to make a permanent repair here to turn it back into a one piece floor that i can then rubberize with line-x or similar. Thoughts?12122010120.jpg

If it shows rot you will want to replace this. Have you checked the rest of the boat out? Many have found rot in similar years boats. I cant see much in your pics so It is hard to tell

The remainder of the floor 'feels' very sturdy. There is no noticeable softness around the seat housings, even the frame of the back to back seating feels sturdy. I know the pictures arent the greatest, the cut out area goes under the cowling (which is completely made of fiberglass/composite material). all the carpeting has been removed, except where it heads up the walls towards the bow. I think if I repair it like i'm thinking, i'd get 15-20 years out of it as often as I'll use it.
I just read another thread replacing pretty much everything inside a monterey, that thread mentions a full tank cover. Now I'm thinking that that is possibly the only thing that was replaced with the plywood. I've googled, no luck. Is that something that can just be purchased from say, Monterey?

Burninman, I bought my first boat in April and same thing. Someone cut out the ply over the gas tank, is this normal, just quick access to the tank is it alright to make the floor one solid piece?

Just a guess, but since there isnt a reason to do it otherwise;
A. the floor was rotted out there
B. the sender @ the fuel tank was replaced at some point, by a home mechanic
C. problem with the gas tank itself

I'm thinking B in my case since there is no indication of the other 2

If the gas tank is under there then you might consider replumbing before sealing it up because the hoses will not last 20 yrs, especially with the ethanol increase coming soon.

My boat is a 1974, I was advised to replumb, the fill hose I pulled out had the date 1985 , so it was done once previously already before I got it.
Its just another thing that has to be done in a boat.
Consider rewiring too, then seal it all up.:)

Did you look through my thread at all? All 95 Monterey's to my knowledge had an access hatch to the gas tank. The problems was, water easily slipped between the cracks and onto the stringers. The screws used to hold down the hatch were not protect, and rot began. I decided to seal up my entire deck and ditch the hatch..I installed a water tight circular hatch right above the sending unit.
My thread link is at the bottom of my post.

I did indeed, I mentioned it in my 2nd reply. It really does look great, congratulations on your handiwork! I was kind of hoping you'd stop by, actually.
I don't 'think' my project will be nearly as in depth as yours, i'm thinking I can get away with just replacing the hatch area and sealing it all, but I will need to recover the entire deck with something, since the carpet was already out.

Did you remove the hatch or was it already gone/rotted out?

You went with outdoor plywood instead of marine grade, any regrets? Glass stick like it should?

Well, since I was replacing a large portion of my deck, I made 3 new pieces that you may have seen in the pictures. And since there isn't much support above the gas tank, I glassed in some braces on the under side like the stock hatch had. Really helped to firm up that piece of ply, and after a few layers of glass, it was solid.

NO regrets on anything I did, to be honest. It turned out just like I had hoped and has been really nice out on the water. The Glass stuck good, I cleaned and prepped the wood with Acetone really good before I put it down, and made sure I really soaked the CSM good. My final layer was cloth, because I was going to Gel coat the surface and then install snap in carpet. The cloth made it much smoother. Not sure what you are planning to put back on the deck?? Snap in? Glue in??

i like the gel coat look, but I'm concerned about the cost. I was thinking of something i could do myself , perhaps a roll on with anti skid, but leaving the carpet out of it. how bad was the gel coat $?

I don't recall exactly how much..but I don't think I paid more than 60-75$ to do my deck. If you lay it down right, you won't need much more than a gallon to do the whole deck.

Finally can get back to this. I had an exhaust/cooling issue that made this irrelevant for a while. All my materials came yesterday, and it doesnt look near as intimidating as it did before I cleaned it all up. I hope to get through it by the weekend. Does pine pollen help or hinder the curing process??
