I have a 1995 OMC Cobra 5.8EFI that started running sluggish suddenly between stops on the lake while kids were switching out on the tube. The boat is a four winns 220. I don't have the serial number (as requested in the FAQ) at the moment and the boat is parked at the lake.

Sluggish - Slow take off, won't pull skier out of water and tops out around 30mph, takes close to 2 minutes to reach that speed. It used to have a terrific gate, hit 45 in moderate waters, almost 50 on glass, could pull my 230 pound bottom out of the water on 1 ski. Runs at slow speeds great, no knocking, engine sounds good, just won't go. We got this boat about 1 month ago, I never paid attention to the RPM before I started having problems, but it will barely hit 4000 now. Other guages (Battery, Oil, etc) are and have been good since we got it.

Work Done So Far:
I've replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter and ordered the Seloc Manual for this engine. My next steps are to replace the plugs, wires and cap but don't know what to do after that. Reading on-line I see about $1000+ of parts I could potentially replace before I find the problem just to find out it might have been a single filter.

Next Steps (I think):
I'm going back to my boat mid-week to pull the floor cover over the gas tank and see if there is some kind of anti-siphon bend/filter that could be clogged (according to some things I've read in forums).

Thanks in advance,

Donnie

I've replaced the spark plugs now and that did not fix it.

Have you found anything out regarding this problem? I have a 1995 5.8 efi that has the exact same problems that you are experiencing. Any new information would be appreciated!!!!

Well I just fixed a similar problem. I need to make this assumption. Your operation temperature is good, and your oil pressure is OK.
If in neutral the engine will not go above 2700 rpm it is in what is called slow mode. No, not a joke. There are two oil sending units, and apparently two water temp as well. If you disconnect the wire from the senders and the problem goes away you have a sender that is acting up and needs to be replaced. Once done, all will be good and you can get out there and have some fun.
Here is a 5.8 EFI when it is running right.
