1995 Piston stop tool for link & sink... Cant find one online anywhere. Is it really necessary?

Thanks Ezeke. Am I correct in understanding that the piston stop too only stops the piston in the same spot?

Does it need stop it at TDC or some number of degrees before?

You can make your own with a bolt and a nut.

Thread a nut all the way up on a large-ish diameter bolt - down a few sizes from the spark plug. Place the piston at the right spot. Slide the bolt into the hole and twist the nut down until it shoulders over the outside of the plug hole.

There's your ruler. If you want to be REAL accurate use two nuts and jam them together.

Another way to do it is to get a long shanked spark plug and screw into the #1 sparkplug hole. Rotate the flywheel clockwise until it stops. Mark the flywheel at the timing pointer. Now rotate the flywheel counter-clockwise until it stops again. Mark the flywheel again. Halfway between the marks is TDC.

I use the long reach plug method and then bend the ground electrode straight so it make it even longer.

I'd assumed this tool needed to be built with some precision. Now I get it.

Stop the piston at any point after, stop it at the same point before TDC and split difference to determine true TDC.

Why inst this a known spot like auto engines? You'd think it would be easy to stamp somewhere???

There is a TDC marked on the flywheel, but the flywhell can move if the key shears or partailly shears and the pointer on the block is movable.

A similar thing can happen with cars - the balancer can slide on the hub. When you restore an old car you always check the mark against real tdc.
