Well guys I took the plunge for some of this fun building action I read about all the time. I found a steal of a deal, I think, on this boat. It has a few issues but nothing major I hope.

Issues:
1 Faded paint
2 needs carper
3 some wood rot on deck extension
4 wiring is shot
5 upholstery yea it had some.
5 motor needs work (sat up with fuel in carbs and no stabilizer in fuel)

On a positive note trolling motor works and I bounced on motor when tilted all the way up and transom was solid with an extra 250 bouncing on it. Here is a link to pics ->http://s351.photobucket.com/albums/q458/reelmccoy2008/

So any ideas on the paint? Do you guys think it can be buffed out? 1 thing at a time more questions and pics to follow.

nice boat. You should be able to buff our the gel coat no problem 3M makes good stuff to do it. The carpet is very easy-just use your old carpet if possible for a template (makes it easier) the wood rot is a bit more troublesome to deal with but (mostly the supplies)
but there are some great people on here that can help you through it. Upholetery--again very easy-can have it recovered, do it yourself, or replace seats (I replaced seats in mine--like that much better) and the cards can be rebuilt easily. Good luck--you will enjoy it for sure:) And welcome to Iboats.

Is this metal flake:

It isn't real clear in your pix, but it appears that your bass boat is red GELCOAT, not paint, and it's got metallic flake in the gelcoat.

This 1995 R70 Ranger is metallic flake:

The metal flake makes it much more complicated to restore it's luster, if even possible.... Too much wet sanding or buffing can expose the edges of the metal flake, which leaves you a surface that is very much like sandpaper.

There are several threads in the Resto section that have had fairly indepth discussions about dealing w/ metallic flake gelcoat. You should probably read thru some of those before you attempt to restore the finish.

Here are a few:

Ok guys
Thanks woodonglass I love going to harbor freight :). I think I can find the 3M at West Marine.

jbcurt00 I thank you for the great reading. I feel like I can now make a educated mess. But it will be okay cause as a last resort I can shoot paint on it.

I will keep pics posted as I go as soon as Hurricane Sandy lets me out to play.

Okay guys I found a mess for sure. I have been stripping the hull to get ready to try and fix gelcoat and found this mess.
Should I try to repair this or just make a new harness? Also the plug shown is it for motor or the rest of the stuff? Need help!

Also should i keep this post going or should I have open this post in the electrical form?

That connector's no good. You could probably repair it with a terminal block, buy new male and female 15 pin connectors, or hard wire the wires together. Nice boat, by the way!

Re: 1995 Ranger R70 project boat, my first

I will have to check and see if I can find the connectors. I looked a bit further and the whole wiring harness has been compromised with corrosion and poor splicing. I would like to keep it original but not to sure with the metal flake as bad as it is. This is all under the stern deck lid, more wires under there I didn't show you.

Thanks I like the boat also just have to get it water ready. Hopefully I can do this and keep total cost under 2 grand.

http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/can-i-save-metal-flake-584240.html as we pointed out you have to find out if its gel coat or clear coat over gel coat. need a real close pic of the front piece where it looks like clear coat peeling.
carpet and seats are easy to redo and as its a ranger that might still sell the pre-made carpets for that model.
the electrical ends can be sourced from newark you crimp on the pins then push them into the blocks if you realy want to stay original.

Also called ranger and ordered new wiring harness and fuse panel. They are making it for me, about $230.00 not bad for going back factory.

Re: 1995 Ranger R70 project boat, my first

i think its clear coat especially as the spot look like there popping away from the gel coat underneath. i would surgest trying the 3m clearcoat remover in a hidden place like behind a seat and see what it does. just apply then wait a few mins and hit it with a pressure cleaner. if it is clear coat and you can remove it then after a 1000-2000 wet sand have it resprayed and it will have that new wet look to it. any deep gorges can be fixed with base gel coat and a color agent or if its a tiny area nail varnish can be used. the color should be under the glitter so it looks like the clear coat is no longer clear and thats whats making the white lines as you can still see some glitter so it would be intresting to see if the color is still underneath the white lines

Do photos 1,2,3 also look like the clear coat is messed up? It is rough to the touch.

Re: 1995 Ranger R70 project boat, my first

can you peel any off the coating off with your finger nail. if you can then its not gel coat (better not be lol)

1- looks like sun burn where the sun has gone to the base color in the gel and that may be restorable then again it may not. the roughness can be smoothed before recoating
2- the little round bubbles is what made me think this is gel coat like my boat
3- is same as one

if that is gel coat only then there is no restoring it to show room as you would have to sand so much you would run out of the glitter coat in spots well before you would get it smooth enoght to buff

any glitter boat that has been left in the sun will do this after 5 years and theres no cheap option. mine is a lot worse and i know that i can remove the clear and respray to give me a good looking boat but it wont be show room.
for a show room finnish you have 3 expensive options which are
1/ complete rub down and respray using paint/ glitter (more a effect mixed in the paint like a show car) etc
2/ complete rub down then re-gelcoat this would be real expensive to add a glitter
3/ quick rub down and full body wrap graphics which would look like new for some years if kept clean and covered

remember its a boat designed for fishing so how long do you think it will last before you scratch it. i was all gun ho to make mine a trailer queen until i found out it was more fun to have a boat that i can use rather than being worried if the dock rope was rubbing the finnish.

Re: 1995 Ranger R70 project boat, my first

Been awhile since last post. Weather has not been right to work outside. Have finished up some deck lids today. Found out they are in pretty rough shape. I was thinking I may just lay another coat of fiber glass and cloth over the top and blend sides in. What do you guys think?
