I moved on. I sold "The Gambler" (refinished boat) to a buddy of mine for $500 when I bought "Blue Leader" from a marina in Green Bay in 2014 after having a marine survey done with positive results. Fast forward to late last summer when I noticed some rot around the gas tank. Did some exploratory surgery and of course it always goes further than you think it will. I go out on the Saginaw Bay which can get pretty choppy at times so this is a deal-breaker for me for using it.
Long story short - I have a 1995 Sundancer with a merc 454 with 85X hours on it. Bravo outdrive. Mechanicals in good shape. Wood rot down below - I took it to a fiberglass shop in Saginaw, MI that recommended I scrap it or give it away, be in at least $15K to fix it. Basically almost what I paid for it so - nah I'm good.
I bought "The Gambler" back from my buddy for $200 as I know this boat in and out (he had purchased something different by now). This way, I can get out this summer with the fam and have confidence in the structural integrity and mechanical parts as I went through them. This thing still rocks and it's great to be able to have this in such great shape yet! (picture included)
So - what to do with the Sundancer? Most repair jobs I see are 18-20 feet. I didn't see a lot of cuddy cabins getting fixed up. I pulled the outdrive off last fall and just pulled the motor and all the other bs (water tanks, water heater, a/c unit, trim pump) out over the last couple of days. I am not going to bother with water tanks, heater, a/c unit, etc. if I decide to get it fixed/fix it myself.
Salvage parts and scrap?
Repair and just take the time?
Not sure at this point if the transom is shot - it sounds solid to me. Both decks below the upper deck are shot and I am sure there's a lot of rot in there. I have the time - wondering if anyone out there has repaired something of this size/caliber. Willing to give it a shot as I have the time and probably the cash as I stretch it out an am in no rush.
