1995 yamaha 55 2stroke outboard wont start need some help gurus

motor wont turn over with key. has been running perfectly until today. tried to fire it up on the muffs at the house before i went to the water. nothing. have power everywhere, 12.6 volts everywhere including the little wire on the top of the solenoid when key is turned, will turn over when touching screwdrivers to the 2 big terminals on the starter solenoid. didn't hold it long, just bumped it and turned right over. checked fuses every where everything is good. I NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP. don't know where else to look on that thing. where else should i look? what else should i stick the voltmeter too? with all I've read on here i still cant find an answer.

Maybe your emergency lanyard key is out? Maybe your control is not in the neutral position? Maybe your starter relay is dead? Remove, clean,tighten all electrical connections for start circuit, including battery connections. Don't panic, probably just a simple electrical issue! Good Luck!

yea the kill switch was the first thing i checked. then the neutral starter relay? where would i find this? its a 96 may-craft 17 ft center console. i haven't seen anything i would associate with a starter relay under the console. would it be on the motor? everything is clean as far as i can tell and it was an all of a sudden thing.

When your control handle is in the center/neutral position the motor will turn over and start, but will not start in gear, forward or reverse. You could have a faulty ignition switch. The only way to check electrical connections is to remove them, inspect, clean with a 3M pad and tighten them back up. Corrosion can take place between connections/terminals/etc. where you can't see it without taking it apart. Is your battery fully charged? Are your battery cables in good shape?

well it turned out to be the the solenoid, got the replacement, put it on, turn the key and get the infamous starter click. i check the voltage on the batt. 12.4... yada yada yada. turns out the starter is toast. pulled it off the motor hooked it to a jump box and it did NOTHING. so now starts the hunt for a starter that dont cost an arm and leg. but thanks a ton for the help

I've heard those starters can be woked on/rebuilt by some electric motor shops...it's worth a try since new starters are big$$$ Good Luck!

yea i found one here that wanted 120 in labor plus parts to re build it and then i found one online new (aftermarket) for a fist full of dollars more (like the Clint Eastwood pun?) with a 3 year warranty so I couldn't pass that one up. But on a much brighter note, I'm really liking this forum, learning all sorts of stuff here

Can you check fuse . Open the cap on the side have extra fuse control electric line in . Good luck
