1995 Yamaha 9.9hp four stroke water pump replacement question " HOW TO ??? "

I assume you need to disconnect the shift rod under the head to pull down the lower unit. How the heck do you get in there to remove the little cotter pin and shaft pin, boy its tight! This motor has electric start and even removing the starter I can't get in there.

have not looked at that motor, but most disconnect at the lower unit.
Newer motors are splined and don not need to undo anything,
but older ones had a barrel nut and lock nut that you needed to undo

Service manual would be good to read , but parts break down should show something

I can't speak for that model and year but my 15hp is a pain to disco the shift rod. Mine has a cotter pin to hold it in. And yes it is under the carb. I had to take some pieces off to get to it.

Exactly, yes I got it apart but I'm not looking forward to putting it back together, I was surprised how Yamaha did this, I thought more or them before I saw this - a cotter pin ??? What the heck!

Yes, I see what you are talking about - did not see it until I dropped the lower unit though.

service manual should tell you how to get to it to take apart and put back together.
I am sure you have read many times it is a good idea to pick up a manual for your motor if you plan on working on it yourself

I told you to look at parts break down for your motor to see if it had the barrel nut to disconnect
did you do that?
I would say no as you never responded.

All I can do is recommend things

And a manual is a good recommendation

Well, like I said in five, I did not see the barrel nut until the lower unit was off - everything is all back together now, works great. Barrel nut removal might have been easier then cotter pin under power head - I can't have manuals for every outboard, I work on all types - thanks

part break downs are available to look at on line without haveing a manual to see what the parts look like.

Good to hear that you got it taken care of.

Not sure if I ever saw a outboard that I had to disconect shift shaft at power head to drop lower unit, but that is old news
