I currently own and run a 1996 model Johnson Faststrike (115 HP). I have been recently informed that the exhaust tube (u-tube) requires replacement as it is causing water to steam up and condensate in one of the cylinders. This motor only has about 150 hours on it and is meticulously maintained. I have heard that this problem is a common one in this model of motor. Have you come across this problem before?

Thanks

Re: 1996 115HP Johnson Faststrike

Welcome to the forum,mate!
Yes i have heard of it. The mech probably mentioned "carbon" or "coking" as the reason.
Different engines exibit the effects in several ways. One would be excessive back pressure causing the head gasket or exaust port plate gasket to let water blow by.
Others will simply refuse to run(or run poorly) in the water, yet when you run it on the muffs in the ol driveway it runs fine.

Others develop holy piston syndrome or otherwise melt down, because carbon holds heat.

The best meathod of preventing these problems is frequent decarbon cleaning with the spray type of decarb cleaner, or the use of an additive like seafoam to the fuel. Most manufacturers recommend decarbing every 80 hours, and more frequently than that,if you idle excessively.
But then, the tube may have simply developed a leak. Running in water with high concentrations of silt or other contaminants may have sanded a hole in it. But if it blew out the seats, you may have a plugged exaust circuit.Question your mechanic about this. He should be able to confirm it,or let you know what the primary reason for failure was.

Re: 1996 115HP Johnson Faststrike

Some of the early 60 degree V$s did have a water problem with #4 cylinder. It wasn't so much of a running problem as an extreme tilting deal. Those motors can tilt high enough on some boats that water in the exhaust area actualy ran back into #4 if it was tilted that far and the motor was to one side. A real strange set of circumstances.

Anyway, if your motor hasn't done it by now, don't worry about it.

Good luck!

I am experiencing water in #4 on a 96 - 115 ocean runner. My mechanic wants 800 bucks to weld a seam on the exhaust intake where the head gasket is. Do you have any other info. I do live in shallow water.

We assume you mean weld between the exhaust bells on the block. It shouldnt take much to do that. You dont really have to undress the powerhead. Just remove it, turn it upside down, clean the base gasket area and weld between the passages.

60 degree motors do not have head gaskets.

I meant to say power head gasket, not head gasket. What I'm interested in knowing is if the weld would cure the water from getting into the cylinder under extreme tilt conditions. If it doesn't, how can it be stopped? Or do you just have to be careful?
The mechanic also said this only happens on 20 shaft models. The water is closer to the cylinder in that instance.
Thanks in advance. Your advice is really appreciated and admired.

I have a 1996 Evinrude that has the same problem with water in bottom (#4) cylinder. What did you find was the real problem?
thanks
