Re: 1996 150 Johnson Ocean Runner RPMs

OK so I still need to finish all the Oms and volts reading. So the power pack could still not be the issue? oh no I hope i did not get something I did not need. but I was getting no spark at all with the PP that I took off and was getting fire with the new one. Let me know what you all think... I hope I did not just throw 250 bucks away

Hopefully when I put this new pack on tomorrow when it come in my RPMs will pick up to 5000 or more...

Power pack in installed and about to take it out for a test run.. Wish me well... Hope all is good and clear now... Look what are the best plugs for it. 78 or the 82 Champion plugs.

I like the NGK plugs but that's me. BPR7HS. They cost less too.

there is really no way of KNOWING, only a suggested STARING point....once you have a baseline set of numbers from running the boat with a known pitch prop, at WOT while the motor is running good...can you make a final judgement on what pitch prop will best suit you...

you will want to run WOT at an rpm range of about 5500, many guys with the 60 degree looper motors like yours run the high 5,000!! like 5700-5900 rpms!!

if the motor is cooling properly and you have the right amount of oil mixed....you should be able to run the high 5,000 as much as you want..and the motor will last.

What size prop are you currently running? If you have resolved your RPM issues then we can determine the proper prop. Every decrease or increase in pitch will change the RPM by 300. Ideally you are looking for 5500 RPM at WOT with your standard load in the boat.

if you got the CDI power pack it has a sticker that say to only use the champion plugs. you most likely did need the power pack, but I was just letting you know that sometimes you get multiple electronic failures, one component can make anther one go bad. so it is just a good idea to do the DVA test on the entire electronics. but you may be fine with just the new PP. by the way that power pack is 157.08 at boatfix.com

That's just back door marketing. The NGK is a direct replacement on the cross reference chart. Regardless of what the sticker says, there,s no way the spark plug is going to ruin a power pack. There's a reason that we run NGK in our blown alcohol funny car and most guys run them in the top fuelers, pro mods, hydroplanes and turbo cars. They are simply a better plug. I run them in every car I have including my big block chevelle. You are probably saying those aren't boats. Internal combustion is internal combustion no matter if it,s carbureted, injected, turbocharged or blown.

Sorry to get on a soap box guys, especially as a newcomer but I have lots of examples of why I run them and none to tell me otherwise. It's just something I believe in.
