OK, this is what we have had done to the motor:
changed water pump, thermostats, vacuum switch

Motor still overheats. Excessive water flowing out of seal at lower unit and it is very hot. Mechanic checked seal and it sits correct. Mechanic says powerhead needs to be removed. Somehow water is flowing the wrong way. BUT, cool water still comes out of pee hole.
Please explain this!

Also, ck engine light still coming on when powering up. Fuel ball does not stay firm at all.

Already have sunk $1100 into motor.

Is this motor worth spending more money on?

Not really sure why the vacuum switch was changed while looking for an overheat but have you looked at the heads? Were the heads ever removed? If so, make sure someone didn't get "happy" with the RTV sealer. If they haven't been off I'd pull them and look at the passages, Sometimes the water jacket gets a scale buildup and needs to be cleaned.

There is no alternate route for the water to take to "run backwards". Water coming out the lower unit should be hot. Not sure what seal you're refering to either.

Re: 1996 150 Johnson Oceanpro trouble

I am talking about 2 different issues, sorry.

1. overheating and hot water coming out of lowering unit where it meets upper part. Mechanic says that much water should not be coming out and it shouldn't be hot.
Can you please tell me why the water is hot?
The seal, I guess it is a seal, is where the lower unit connects to the upper part.

2. low fuel flow issue - mechanic said vacuum switch was bad. These folks were recommended and seem to be honest. But I think they are "out of the book", no trouble shooting, if that makes sense.
We have done everything recommeded on this site and others for low fuel and the ck engine light except blow out the fuel vent. If someone pumps the ball continuously while running the ck engine light does not come on!

Any input is appreciated!

You may have a fuel pump issue. A noticed increase while pumping the bulb usually points that way, a new diaphragm anyways, something to look into. As far as the overheating, you say you changed the water pump, I assume you mean the whole kit, including the impeller correct? When does it seem to over heat, at idle, high speeds? I would drop the lower unit again and first make sure that the rubber grommet on top of the impeller housing is sitting correctly and not blocking the flow of the water, they very easily get knocked out of position. Then remove the t stats one at a time and blast compressed air up the water line to ensure that it is getting to the power head. You may also be able to notice any leaks while doing this. If you end up pulling the heads like dhadley stated, ensure the water deflectors are good and clean. Re torque the bolts to spec as overheating loosens them. Let us know what you find.

Don't overlook answering HT's questions but here's a couple things to keep in mind -- water coming out between the lower unit and the mid section is normal. Your mid section should have spacing in there to cut down on fretting as opposed to a flat mating surface. The water is hot because the exhaust is in that area.

Yes, changed whole kit and t-stats. Just picked up the boat for the long ride back to Pensacola from Cape Cod!
Mechanic wanted to pull the powerhead but we leave in a few days. He said the middle section of the unit (between lower unit and engine) is gettng very hot. He thinks the water may not be hitting the hose? that goes down?

What and where is the diaphragm? He never mentioned this in regards to fuel flow issue.

We use to do all of our I/O Mercruiser work but an outboard is a different beast!

Please send more feedback.

His suspicions were the same as mine. When he said he thinks "the water may not be hitting the hose, that goes down", that was what i was referring to when I said to check that the water line goes into the grommet on top of the impeller housing. The diaphragm in part of the fuel pump. Do you have a manual?

No manual. We plan on buying an E-Tech when we return to Pensacola. Would like to get what we have in this engine back.
