1996 150 johnson

i have a 1996 150 johnson carbrated that had set for years so i cleaned the carbraters but when i start id i wants to idle at 1500 rpm and it starts poping in exhoust any ideas wat is deal is

have you replace the impeller and serviced the water pump?

well i havent put a carb kit in it yet but i did take all bowl off and check them they were spot less except for the high speed jets i cleaned them, and as for the impeller i havent put one in it yet it does have water psi but before i put it on the water it will get a new impeller

definitely new impeller, no need to burn up a good motor.

when testing do not rev the motor over 1500 rpms, in neutral, on muffs. read this:

yea i havent even reved it but wants to idle at 1500 to 2000 on its own

That could be running lean or ignition advance is stuck.

I would definately rebuild carbs with new kits.
You might get it to where it sounds alright but if one carb is dirty and runs lean you could easily burn the piston, for the sake of a $20 carb kit and 2 hrs of your time.
