After finally getting my lower unit back together and installed, I can't get the motor to stay running in reverse? While the boat was down, I replaced the throttle/shift control and cables. The old cables had a lot of slack in them. Now, the motor does fine in forward gear and neutral idle, but when shifted into reverse, it seems almost like the motor is bogging down (chokes down and shuts off). Also, when shifted into reverse, it doesn't feel like it engages into gear until it has about 3/4 throttle in reverse. You have to give it almost full throttle in reverse for the motor to even pick-up and respond. Could it be adjustment in the controls? I am to the point now where I can't afford to take it to another shop. I have a manual but I don't know where to start. Hope someone can help.

How about disconecting the cable and shifting it into reverse by hand. If it will do that it seems that the problem is in cable adjustment.
