1996 25Hp Short Shaft, Man Start--Prop Removal

What size is the metal nut that secures the prop to the gear case on a 1996 25hp short shaft? Any special tricks to removing it. I tried with a pair of vice grips and had a good grip on it but it doesn't want to budge and I dont want to twist or strip anything. On my way to the hardware store soon to get the right sized socket (it's pretty big, above what's in my standard 250 peice set).

Any help would be awesome.
