Howdy,

I have a question. I don't know much about outboard engines yet so bear with me. A friend was over looking my new used purchase over and we eventually got around to taking the cover off of the engine for a look see inside. I was pointing out that the powerpack I think that's what it's called) was new. He seemed to think that I could by a rectifier, connect it to a "spare" lead that comes off of the powerpack, and use it to charge my battery while the engine was running. If that is possible I would like to find out what I need to buy to make it happen. Anyone have an idea?

Hello
we need engine model numbers and the wire color would be nice. I dont think any extra wires are supposed to be on it. good luck and post again

No problemo. Here's a picture of the doo dad and the wire. It's yellow. The part number on the black doo dad looks to be

BRP CD25L/6100 or
585224 4DIB-BA

The engine was built for the military in 1996.

MFG Part Number- AML35D
Outboard Marine Corp
S/N G 03739054
NSN: 3H2805-01-267-5047

Thanks

I just bought one of those too. Does your kill switch work? Are both wires from the kill button direct to the CD pack? Does yours have the jet pump or the prop? Does it smoke like crazy at idle? I have been going a little crazy trying to get info on mine and have ended up with 3 manuals that show things differently.

Re: 1996 35 HP OMC charging question

hello
the wire looks like its part of the S.L.O.W. system. the pack is a dd 2 s l
which means its a 2 cyl with slow. look on the powerhead and see if there is a temp sensor. if there is not then either the pack is wrong or someone removed the sensor, I dont think the military version used the sensor.
good luck and keep posting but dont try to use that lead to charge the battery

Re: 1996 35 HP OMC charging question

Harker- The guy that owned the motor before me wired the kill switch to a button up on the console. One wire is grounded on the engine block somewhere and the other is connected to the black wire with the yellow stripe on the CD pack. I've got the prop version or at least that's what it has on it now. I wouldn't say that it smokes like crazy. About normal for a two cycle. Are you using a 50:1 mix? That's what the previous owner told me to run.

Rodbolt- No sensor. What does S.L.O.W. stand for? Is there such a thing to convert AC pulses from a power pack to DC for battery charging or do outboard engines have alternators?

Does your kill switch work? Thanks Mike,my CD looks a bit different than yours. I think you would need to put a charge coil and other misc stuff in under the flywheel to have charging capability..then you would have to decide if you want a regulated system or non regulated (basically for lights) Does smoke and oil come out of yours just above the lower pivot on the transom mount? On the boat side?

Harker,

Yep... it sure does. I've been told that is normal. Whatever normal is

Hello
S.L.O.W. was a speed limiting overheat warning. it would drop the rpm and make the motor get all funky. sometimes even when nothing was wrong.

Re: 1996 35 HP OMC charging question

Hello again. hit the wrong button:). there is no good way that I know of to use the pack voltage to charge a battery. seems ether someone put on the wrong pack or they removed the temp sensor. best I recall those motors had no SLOW functions. they were kind of throw away motors.
if this was an ex seal engine it should have a bunch of hose nipples and a valve on the stbd side. if this is a seal motor the pistons have 1/2 inch flats milled on the skirts parrelel with the wrist pin bores. made low speed work kind of nasty and some were rather smoky. its more expense then its worth to add all the charging components. and then it only charges 4 amps at wide open.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt- Yep, mines a Navy Seal engine. So far it starts easy and runs fine. Still, I'm thinking about moving to a 4 stroke later this year or early next year. The motor runs fine but I would like a charging system and electric start. I guess that I'm getting lazy in my old age :)

Does anyone know where I can get the repair manuals for the (AML35D) military outboards.

You cannot get a battery charge wire off the power pack. the power pack is strictly for ignition only. To get that engine to charge your battery, you will have to get the kit made for that engine.

Re: 1996 35 HP OMC charging question

The 'doo dang' shown, Power Pack CD25L/6100. I've been asked by a friend to find one of these. Anyone have any suggestions where I can find? I've trawled the net, but haven't returned much.

Thanks
