1996 6hp mercury OG 410851 6M short shaft
this year didn't start right, tested 6 hp in water tank and saw brown oil leaking from propeller area. How do I remove the gear case ? how do I remove the carrier assy bearing ? Can'tfind a manual for the year 1996 without it containing from 4 hp to 225 hp. Bought one last year and of no help. Where would the oil be leaking from ?

First thing is to determine what oil you saw, whether it had anything to do with your engine not running, and then IF you had to go into your gearbox, how to realign the LU gears upon reinstalling....need gauges to set it up correctly.

If you put your engine in N and you cannot start it, chances of a LU problem are next to none. The oil could be normal exhaust oil dribble from a 2 stroke exhaust.

If it were coming from your prop shaft seal then you don't have to rip the guts out to fix it. You can remove the prop and dig out the seal and replace without even draining your fluid....but you do want to do that and replace with fresh and new gaskets on the fill/vent screws and use the OEM specified seals....at your dealer or online. Most are blue fiberous.

One thing else you can do to get an idea on where it is coming from is to look at your LU oil. If black or blue/black, or in the case of non OEM oil, honey colored and CLEAR, you probably don't have a LU problem. If it looks like coffee with cream in it then you have water in your LU and it came from somewhere.

Re: 1996 6hp how to removethe lower unit, no manual

Hello, I ran the engine in a water tank and it started first try. I removed from the tankand saw a "coffee w/cream " colored oil leaking from the prop area. I pulld the side screw out from the LU and the oil looked good and clear. I tried to remove the Lu and can't see how the shift rod disconnects. it's one piece from the top down to the LU. Now that I have the LU partially disconnected i want to do the water pump impellar.
What gauges are used to set the LU up ?
Is the shift rod disconnected from the LU and how is it removed?
Removing the carrier bearing assy is done with a tool that costs over $500.00, do you have a solution to remove it without this tool. Can I make a tool that will work?
Thanks again
I see why they get big bucks to repair these , they are a pain it the back side
