Just got a 1996 88hp Evinrude that was completely rebuilt. Wondering what I should do about a break in-period. Do I go a little heavy on oil? No full throttle for a while? How long? etc...

I run double oil mixture for the first tank of gas. I run the engine at all power levels, I just don't run at a constant speed for the first tank of gas.

Is there a need for further maintainence down the road...other than the usual? One tank of double oil just seems a little insignificant for a newly overhauled motor.

Thanks for the help!

Depends what you mean by an "overhaul". There are differetn kinds of overhauls.

If you got new pistons, rings, and cylinders, the double oil was the advice I got when I got this motor new (I first got this engine in 1996!). The dealer said to double the oil for the first 10 hours and to not run it at the same speed for more than 10-15 minutes. I did that.

Been trouble free for 15 years.

But if the overhaul did not include pistions/rings/etc, you shouldn't have to double the oil.

Retorque the head bolts after the, double oil, 10 hour break-in. Retorque when the engine is cold.
