The front of the engine on my Johnson is a little on the oily side, the air intake box and the area beneath it in general is a little on the oily side. all the cables etc and covered in a film of oil. is this normal?

There is a little oil in the front of the bottom engine tray as well.

I can't see any obvious leaks.

if it's enough to be collecting at the bottom I would say you have a slow oil line leak... does it seem like fuel/oil or straight oil? I've found that they don't need to be obvious to be dripping... if the lines are brittle I would replace them.

There is not loads in the tray its more a gradual build up over time.

It has been suggested that it may just be fuel out of the carbs that has dripped out when the engine is tilted forwards then the fuel evaporates leaving the residue?

The hoses are all fin from what I can see.

The float valves in the carbs should prevent that from happening if they are working correctly. The problem is one that should be pursued, because you have the potential for an explosion.

Fuel shouldn't be dripping out the front of the carbs when the engine's tilted, if it was, you should be able to see it.

Is there a hose (or hoses) leading to the air silencer from the intake? I think sometimes people leave them off sometimes.
