1996 evinrude 15 hp impeller problem

I have 1996 evinrude 15 hp and i replaced the impeller about six moths ago and i went out last friday night and the impeller went out so i went and bought and installed the new impeller kit saturday and it ran fine for about an hour or two of runnin up and down the river then the motor just started smokin and sure enough it was the new impeller it was all chewed up and melted i installed both of them right i double checked and made sure...what would make it keep burnin them up? anything would help thank you

This is a strange one. Remove the pump and below it is a screen for the water intake. Make certain it is good and clean. It sounds like it might be blocked or at least partially blocked. Best of luck. Rick.

An easy remedy is to buy the complete pump kit, with the stainless steel plate, cup, plastic housing, seals and impeller w/ key. If the plate, or cup are scored, they will eat up a new inpeller in short order. Also, the kit has grease to lube the impeller and cup for assembly, use it liberally when putting the pump back together.
