1996 Evinrude 15 hp outboard cuts out at high speed after warm

I'm stumped...the outboard runs great at idle and low speed but cuts out at high speed after a while. I replaced the carb kit, replaced fuel pump, checked/tightended fuel hoses/connections, replaced tank bulb and both gas connections and checked gas hose, checked compression at 85/90 psi, replaced plugs, checked spark and wires, checked for electrical shorts. Any other possibilities or suggestions? I'm thinking the power pack or coil maybe now.

welcome. have you check spark immediately when it starts cutting out.

Not immediately....but seems to start and run good at idle or low rpms even when I can't get it to run at high throttle.

Any of the wires happen to be touching any part of the cylinder block or head? (or any other part of your motor that gets warm/hot?) If so, they may be heating up at WOT to the point where they lose resistance and power?

it will start and idle on one cylinder. check the spark.

no, I checked for wires shorting out and there were wire strands at the end of the plug from the power pack that were frayed but I trimmed them and sealed them up....still cuts out at high speed after a while......but it still runs smooth at idle.

did you do this? have you check spark immediately when it starts cutting out. there are reason we ask this., it is called trouble shooting. to eliminate problem, we test the most likely cause first. with out this we go no further, you just start throwing parts and money at it.

I pulled the plugs and checked the spark several times after I'd get back to the dock after it'd cut out and it seemed that the spark on both plugs were good when pulling the cord and looking at the spark with the plug out and grounded and connected to the plug wire.

ok, when you did the carb, did you remove an clean the high speed jet?

I bought a carb kit and took it all apart except the press on metal piece but pulled the jets and cleaned all throughout with carb cleaner.

The last time out it I started it up cold and would run fine at full throttle for about 3 or so miles around the lake......then it started cutting out.....and wouldn't come out of it...it seemed to run fine at low throttle to get back. I pulled the head and coil and power pack off and thermostat out to check inside. There was a little carbon on the top of the pistons and on the head and ports but nothing much. The cylinders look pretty good.....a minor score but can't even hardly detect with your fingernail. Any way to test the coil and power pack?

the easiest way is when it starts to cut out. check the spark immediately. if you find one plug not firing, go to the dock, completely swap the postions, of the coil, then go back out and if it starts to cut out again, check the spark, if the problem follow the suspect coil replace it. if the problem staid with the cylinder, then you suspect the power pack. you have to troubleshoot these problems, or throw $ and parts at it.

There is only one combined coil unit that serves two plugs......not two separate coils. If one side is bad, the whole coil has to be replaced anyway. How can I test the coil off the motor?

yes, carb clean/blown out.....runs great for a few miles at top end then warms and cuts out so doesn't seem to be the carb. Is there a way to test the coil off the motor?
