Hey fellas. My buddy has a '96 28hp Evinrude that starts great, idles okay, and does great at upper RPMs. Right above idle, the motor seems to misfire and gets a little 'clunky'. I was thinking that there is an issue in the ignition system. Do you all agree? This motor has an ignition coil system, and a sensor and rectifier. Is there any way to test the sensor and rectifier? What resistance should my multimeter display when checking the ignition coil? Thanks guys!!

is it bogging right off idle?....an inductive timing light used on each plugwire in turn when the "miss" occurs can really narrow things down..just look at the strobe and you can tell if one or both are missing....try marineengine.com for diagrams of the ignition system and cdi electronics troubleshooting guide <google> for voltage and resistance values...these will be given in dva and require a meter that can do this, or a dva adapter to fit your meter

Well it is not really bogging, but it is coughing just above idle. I suspect that it is missing in the higher RPMs but you just can't tell.

k...the easy/free stuff is to clean the grounds for the powerpack and coils <looks like the coils ground through the coil mounting screws>, each coil has a replaceable plug wire so I'd suggest removing them and cleaning the contact areas...pull the amphenol plug connections apart and clean the pins and sockets with rubbing alcohol...

Awesome thanks! I will get to that this weekend, and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the referral to the CDI manual too, man that joker is straight to the point!
