I am having an issue with my motor. I have a 1996 Sunbird Spirit 170. It seems to start fine and idles decently, but when I give it some throttle, it will go at slow speeds. At about half throttle, it will sputter like it wants to go, but bogs down. Increasing the throttle further will cause it to die out. I did notice that pushing the key in while accelerating will allow it to get up to full speed and RPM's according to specs for the boat and will run fine until I stop. Then it dies and I have to start and repeat. I have replaced the plugs and the wires and did not see any fuel leaks. The fuel filter looks fine. I have very little mechanical experience and this is my first outboard engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a carb problem. Maybe a carb cleaning and rebuild is in your future?

I really haven't had a chance to troubleshoot the past couple days, but am looking for the service manual. I will be troubleshooting this weekend. Is my engine a Crossflow or Looper model? The model number is E90TLEDA. It is a 1996 Evinrude 90 hp. Thanks!

Guess I should've asked whether it is a 60 or 90 degree as well... Thanks!

Looks to be a 90* crossflow, although I did not think that motor was made in 1996. I had thought they were all loopers by then.

I double checked and the ED in the model number translates to a 1996 model according to a website. Is that accurate? I've assumed it is a 1996 even thought the year stamp on the model plate is off center and the 6 is hard to read.

The model number you gave is a 1996. Look at the block. Is it wedge shaped? If so, it is a 90* motor. If rectangular it is a 60* motor.

Now look on the outside of the cylinders. Do you see transfer covers? If so, it is a crossflow. If not, it is a looper.

It is a 90 degree crossflow. Well, I found a small fuel leak on top of the fuel pump. It is a round part that looks like some sort of cap, but doesn't come off??? Can't really see the crack, but fuel is definitely leaking out. Any idea on how to find a manual fuel pump to replace vro pump?

Are you trying to source a fuel pump aftermarket? Do a google search on the part number. Consult the maxrules website for a fuel pump.

I am replacing the VRO pump with a manual pump. Found the model I need and have it ordered! Is there a possibility this could have been the cause of my original issue or could I have to continue troubleshooting?

I think you still need to troubleshoot. I do not think your original issue was with the fuel pump. I think it is the carbs.
