I have a problem where the starter will engage the flywheel but the drive gear just spins. It will start after multiple tries but I would like to know if there is a way to fix it without replacing the starter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

One other thing, I have tried lubing the shaft and it does the same thing.

Re: 1996 Evinrude starter question

If the starter pinion gear is engaging the flywheel and is turning, so must the flywheel! Or do you mean the gear is engaged with the flywheel, is not turning, but the shaft on the starter is. Or do you mean the starter and the gear spin, but the gear is NOT engaging with the flywheel. If the last scenario is the problem, make sure you have a fully charged battery. The starter needs to spin quickly to make the pinion rise up the shaft to engage the flywheel.

I'm sorry about the description. The gear is engaged to the flywheel. However, the flwheel is not turning. The shaft appears to be turning.

The bendix assembly on your motor may be similar to mine and is "clutched". The bendix assembly will need replacing if it is slipping so much that it will not turn the flywheel. Mine is a 95 175hp V6 Looper. I had a similar experience about one year ago. What motor do you have? You can remove the spark plugs and try cranking to see if this is the case.<br />Good luck

The motor is a 1996 112HP V4 Evinrude. Thanks for the reply.

Re: 1996 Evinrude starter question

Although this post is old, I fell compelled to add my two cents. During my 1996, 112 SPL power head change back in 2005, I too experienced this problem and also lubed the shaft as described above without success. Well...as I have read 1,001 places on this board, "read the manual, read the manual, read the manual", the manual specifically states NOT to grease or lube the starter shaft. After wiping my good intentions off the starter shaft with some solvent, the starter (which would not even turn the flywheel one inch before) spun like a madman and she fired right up. So...the moral of the story is a rag dabbed with solvent is allot cheaper that a new starter. Read the manual and save yourself some aggravation.
