Just purchased this boat/motor combo. and after first outting found fouled plugs(amongst other things). Everyone at this bulletin board says use high octane fuel and good oil. Any reccomendations on min. octane level and "good"oil? Previous owner used 87 fuel and Quicksilver oil. Can I use anything to clean the build up off the pistons/rings short of a tear down?

Hi, Dmessy. You didn't read enough of this board. The previous owner used the correct fuel (87 octane unleaded, alcohol-free) and a good oil. There is not complete agreement on the octane question, which has been debated to death here more than once.

There has been debate, also, about using decarbonizing treatments. There are better minds here than mine to guide you on that issue. I suppose the first question here is whether or not it is really gunked up.

Did you check the plugs before you bought the boat or before the first outing? If not, you don't know how long it took to gunk them up. Did the engine quit? If not, the plugs are merely covered with deposits. To some, "fouled" plugs will not fire.

Check out the above. Maybe your only problem is that you bought an unknown and now you need to know.

Let us know.

Red sky at night....
JB
