Re: 1996 Jeep grand cherokee

I used to use my buddy's 96 Cherokee to pull my 21' bayliner, not a problem. We now use his EcoBoost, and that pulls awesomely.. That besides the point though

If memory serves, you have a 4 speed tranny. My old man always told to shift into third or out of overdrive when pulling to be able to have more power at speed. Not sure, but I think that's what your owner's manual will tell you too.

Have fun, and take your time to start. Especially backing up... I remember always getting frustrated with that when is started

Re: 1996 Jeep grand cherokee

Hi guys I just got a 24 foot pontoon boat and a 500 pound toon trailer. Can I haul this with my 1996 jeep grand Cherokee 4x4 with selectrac 4.0 i6?

My Jeep is one generation later than yours, but it has the same engine. It pulls our 20' pontoon like a boss, even at the ramps. The boat/trailer/motor is somewhere around 3300lbs. The only issue it has is highway speeds. Pontoons are like pulling a sail once you get up to some fast speeds. I can do 70mph if I really want, but it's better sticking to <60. Much faster really works the transmission and engine harder than I feel comfortable with. I suggest adding a transmission cooler to your Jeep, if it does not have one already.

Same here. Like I've said before, the most important part of the towing equation is the DRIVER! If you use common sense and understand the dynamics your fine. In Europe the same vehicles have almost double the tow ratings yet they have fewer mishaps than their American counterparts.
