Re: 1996 Johnson 115 - won't go over 2500 RPMS - HELP!!

I used carb kits on all four. Blew them out, etc. I did not set the float to spec, didn't know there was a spec for height and fall. That could be a problem. I see the leak from the carb when I pump the ball. There is another leak somewhere that I can't see. How long does it take the temp to get above 207? SLOW sounds like it could be part of my issue but the one plug looking brand new and the others having fuel on them leads me away from that. In SLOW does the motor idle and start perfectly?

I don't know what the OIS system is?

SLOW should leave start and idle like normal, but will not allow over 2500 RPM. As for the carb leaking, since you say that you didn't set float height, and used four new kits (I'll assume new floats ans needles), I'd say that your float height set would be highly suspect. I'm at work and don't have the spec on me right now, but seem to recall that the carb kits all include a diagram which shows where the float should sit. I'd check this first, unless there's an obvious leak from a connection, though from your previous posts this seems unlikely.

I think the carb rebuild has to be done again...I rebuilt 4 115 carbs just a few weeks ago...they are still sitting on my desk right here...when i installed the new valve and seat the float was WAY WAY OFF..almsot made me think there was somthing way different about my parts...but i adjusted the float to the specs...

now the specs right out of the book are UP TO INTERPRETATION, i think

they show the carb upside down with the float intsalled, they have a line drawn coming off the carb housing and a line coming off the top edge of the float...the lines are PARRALLEL.. and they show arrows representing the dimension between the two lines and say + or - 1/32nds "

is that LEVEL plus or minus 1/32nds" or is that just the dimension + or - 1/32nds....BIG difference!!!! when i first installed the new valve and seat I could adjust the float to be level and have 1/4" gap!!!!!!

it matters because if left like that I could be limiting the amount of fluid in the bowl!!

I adjusted and adjusted till i got a 1/32nds gap AND a level float... I feel good about that.

OIS is the ignition system and the back of your motor should have a plastic cover with that label on it OIS2000 right between the heads!!

as for the 207* temp that is only relevant to what temp the motor needs to COOL to to DISENGAGE the SLOW system( and is only one requirement of TWO needed to dissenage SLOW) after the temps rose above 240* to activate the SLOW system in the first place....so there is no relevant time associated with how long the motor takes to rise to 207*....

find your leak before you take the carbs apart again or even off the motor!!!!

the leak from the carb when you pump the ball??? exactly where is the gas FLOWING from on the carb when the p bulb is squeezed??

I was getting gas squirting out when i squeezed the bolb on my motor and traced it to a bad O-ring in the fuekl bracket under the brass nozzle

good luck

if you have fuel spilling out of a carb then your needle valve is not closing...this will definatly hurt your performance. you need to clean out the needle valve area and maybe replace the needle valve if it needs to. you cannot proceed any further until you fix ALL fuel leaks. by the way cleaning out carbs is more than just blowing them out...you have to clean all passages and jets with some type of carb cleaner..

Reporting Back!!!

Fuel leaks were coming from the carbs, for sure. Two of the carbs were missing the little brass balls. There was a gasket or plastic washer on the needle valve that I had on the wrong side. It wasn't allowing the needle to go down as far as it needed to. Third and finally, there was a loose jet that wasn't allowing fuel to get to one of the cylinders. All repairs, a little over $400.00.

Now the boat runs great, minus the alarm that's going off underneath the dash. I posted a seperate thread for this. Thank you to everyone for helping.
