I have a 1996 Johnson FastStrike 150 that is flooding out as soon as I try to start it - even without priming and having sat for a week. I used to be able to clean the plugs and it would fire up, now its just plain dead. Then, even after being off most of the day it would start back up and run great,

I suspect the VRO fuel pump since all 6 cylinders are flood (ruling out a hung float in a carb).

If I am close to on target how would I go about disabling the VRO or removing the VRO Fuel Pump itself? And, If I did would that solve the flooding problem?

Sorry for so many questions and thanks for being patient with me.

Bob,
Before you condem the VRO,did you check spark?
Could be electrical, maybe intermittent spark or no spark.Check one plug for a strong blue spark first....Also check the primer solenoid.Make sure the RED (pointer) valve is pointing down....

I think the spark is likely good. I was just looking at it and there is gas coming from someplace on the VRO Fuel Pump. The red lever is cracked (but it is pointing down)with gas dripping off of it. I'll have to look deeper and see where the gas is coming from. Just a little over a year ago I had the VRO Fuel Pump changed because it was dumping excessive oil into the mixture and causing all kinds of other problems - I would think the unit might have more than a year and a half life span.

Check all the hose clamps around the VRO,make snug.Look for broken or missing plastic pull straps on tube ends.New VRO's are upwards of $250.00+(where I'am),so I hope it's not bad.I guess you could always bypass the VRO and pre-mix gas and oil in the tank.Another idea.Dry the area around the VRO(rag).Prime the bulb while watching this leaky area. You may see where the fuel is coming out. Also, take a look at "1979 Evinrude 140 horsepower" post.Joe R. shares some knowledge about stators.... :)
