i what to get a new control with tilt and trim and cables but don't understand the different kinds and what i really need for 1996 Johnson

you need a OMC control with OMC cables...OMC changed the wire harness connection in 1996 so you need to see if your harness is the big red plug or the newer style harness connections..do you have a center console or a side mount?? cables can be ordered new from Iboats.com..you may be better to take a drive up to a boat shop and let them tell you what you need...why are your replacing your controls anyway???

BRP has some slick looking remotes that will mount up to older OMC engines with an adapter. I've been tempted to change mine out myself just because I like the looks of the new ones.
