I am looking to do a little maintenance on my outboard. I am interested in cleaning up the carbs, replacing plugs and adjusting the idle. I have read on this site and think I could easily complete this, but was wondering if any of you had any advice or knowledge for me before I undertake this challenge.

The engine seems to smoke for a while while I run it...do you think Seafoam would help with this?

Also. What kind of upgrades (from 20hp-25/30hp) could I do to this engine and what would it take. (carb/???)

Thank you for your time and help,

Chris

1. get an OEM factory service manual. Ebay is a good place to look and you can sometimes find them cheap. Stay away from clymer and solenec manuals, they are too generic.

2. I believe you can swap out a 1985+ 30hp carb or a 1984 and earlier 35hp carb for a power boost, but you should check out part numbers between your motor and the 1996 30hp to make sure. You will need the plate the carb bolts onto as well, or you can enlarge the hole on your current plate.

check here, use your model number to help navigate the site.
