1996 Johnson 88 SPL

Water leaking out of a cover on the upper part of the motor. The mechanic at the dealer told me about it, said it was fairly common. I ordered the gaskets to do it myself as he said it would be $300 for him to do it. Any idea what is leaking and how hard it is to repair ? Thanks

I have the same motor. Where is water coming from? Near the plugs, near the two hoses at the bottom of the power head,???. I've replaced nearly every gasket on mine and most are really easy. 300 bucks eh? I'm in the wrong profession!

I had a "OMC trained marine mechanic" recently tell me he would have to remove the power head to replace the thermostats on my 1988 V4 and the labor for that would be $250.00 just to R&R the powerhead + the cost of the thermostat job. Kept that $250 in my pocket.

The stats are not impossible to do with the powerhead on, main thing is getting the screws started on reassembly without starting them crooked. I use a couple of tapered wood wedges or better yet a friend. If one holds everything in position (the springs for the relief valves are the problem) and the other starts the screws by hand it goes ok. You can also partially drop the motor "pan" at the back which gives you a little more room.<br /><br />Good luck!
