Re: 1996 Larson Flyer 166
I have had the boat out a couple of times since I got it.
The boat seems to porpoise easily. I have to keep the motor trimmed most of the way down in order to keep it from doing that but that causes the steering to pull right and the boat is slower. Have you had this same problem? It is not horrible but it could be better.
The other issue is that when I am going fast it picks up speed, levels off and then at some point breaks away and goes faster. I have seen some posts about this but have you had the same issue with your boat?
Have you noticed anything else with your boat that I should keep an eye on?
Thanks for your help.
I typically start-up with trim fully down, but I can start with trim up. Boat has always porpoised if trim is above 1/2 if I'm not going full out, so I'd say I see the same issue as you. Put a person in the bow and it's always better.
I also feel the jump from in the water to above it when you trim up at speed. I think this is reasonably common on many boats with modern hull shapes.
I've always loved the performance of this boat. It's a bit wider than a normal 16.6' boat and that makes it nice and stable. However, the keel isn't strong and I've found maneuvering at low speed in the wind can be tricky.
Otherwise the boat has held up very well. Still our primary boat and we're loving it.
Enjoy!
