I was getting water in the foot oil so I changed it. Checked after a trip to fish and milky again. Soooo, I took the foot off and replace all the parts at the water pump seals and o rings and impeller gaskets everything. Also changed the seals on the lower shaft where the prop is. All went well until I put the foot back on. I was very careful that the water hook ups lined up top gear went in good greased everything good. But there is the small shaft up top in front of the main shaft going into engine that has to line up also, I believe this is the forward and backwards(puts it in gear) Here is the problem I start engine put in gear and nothing happens. The prop dont move. OH MY GOSH!!!!! Did I miss something? The only thing I can think of is that small shaft that engages forward and backwards came up when I took the piece off to replace that o ring that is on the part the seal is in. I just pushed it back down and it went in easy. I thank you for your help in advance!!

If your talkin' 'bout tha small splined shaft in tha front of tha drive shaft that is tha shift shaft. If you pulled it up at all it probably came out of tha shift cam. Unless your really, really good, very lucky and tha stars are all aligned you MIGHT be able ta get it back into tha cam if it hasn't moved from its spot on tha cam follower. More than likely its gonna hafta be torn down............

One thing though. Did you turn tha shift shaft any at all while tha tha gear case was off?

Yeah it probably did turn. It just seem to fit right back down into place though. Will it do that and still be miss alined? When I put it back in I had to turn it a little to get it to fit back down far enough.

Yes, it can if tha cam slipped outta tha follower.

Ok. lets figure something out. Last year of tha Mag II was 90/91. A '96 is a Mag III. Tha reason I'm askin' is tha gear case. Tha Mag II has tha small dia, case. Tha first coupla years of tha Mag III also had tha small dia case. Think 96 it was a big dia. case. How many water inlet holes are in tha side of tha case. With tha small case tha shift shaft can be turned 360 degrees. So it could possibly be turned "too far". It can be turned to tha right place if tha gear case is off tha motor. Takes a little "practice" ta get it there but can be done..........

Gotta add though. Not very many Mag II/III's around that still have tha "little" case still on 'em. Most have been changed somewhere down tha line........

Yeah. '96 Mag III/XR 6. They have tha big gear case. Still might be able ta get it ta work if it got turned tha wrong way and wasn't pulled out to far. You can take it off and turn tha shaft by hand. If you feel and hear a "click" try turnin' tha drive shaft ta check for "in gear". If that doesn't do anything ya might as well bite tha bullet. It will need ta be taken down ta be fixed................

Thanks so much for your help. I took your advice and took it to my locate boat shop. $150 to go inside and fix it.
