1996 Merc 5.7LX T-stat

T stat is in a housing/manifold and I want to replace it. Seems to be stuck in there, anyone know how to get it out? have Clymer, does not address this.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />PS Merc Owners Manual shows and exploded view so I think it should come out

break out the plastic collar /retainer and then pry out the stat.

thanks, so break the plastic, will do . new stat did not come with the plastic part.

no? is it possible to get it out without damaging the plastic or do you always have to break the plastic collar?

Yes you can get it out w/o breaking the plastic.I just did mine.Get one of those cheap little knives with the thin razor type blades on it and clean around the plastic.You should be able to eventually push the blade in between the housing and the plastic.Do this all the way around.On the port side there will be a small place that you can get a small long nose pliers to grab the plastic.Dont force it ,just work it out.The stat should come right out.the plastic is a retainer ring.They used to come in brass which were easier to get out because you could bend them.Charlie

Thanks, I got it. Used a little penetrant around plastic retainer and eased it out without breaking it.

You dont need to break anything. No it doesnt come with the thermostat
