1996 Merc Tracker lost RPM's

I had an alarm going off the last weekend when I had the boat out. I has accidentally left the motor up a bit and I assume it got a little warm but I wanted to check it out a little. A couple of days later, I pulled compression on all cylinders and it was nearly 110. I also changed the impeller just for good measure and had the prop redone.

Yesterday, a buddy and I went out for a bit. I typically check everything before launch but this time I didn't. he is a boat owner and I ASSumed he vented the tank when he dropped the transom saver. Started off good and ran about 10 miles but when I dropped the throttle to idle it died. I looked back and my tank was sucked in badly so I vented it and it cranked easily. After that though, I lost top end RPM's. Started off not so noticeable but later I could only get about 4300 at WOT. Could I have killed the fuel pump or collapsed the line???? What should I look at first??????

Do another compression check. Leaning out can hurt it bad.

You can screw the fitting out of the bayonet connector, and then use the bulb to pump fuel into a can. If it pumps easily, the line in the tank is OK. It is concievable you could have crushed it, especially if it's plastic.

Thanks for the info, will check again tomorrow. I replaced the filter and the line from the tank already. Do you think I should check the line in the tank? I am fairly new to the boating scene and I am learning that every time you let something go unchecked, it gets expensive.:redface:

I have replaced my fuel line, fuel filter, rebuilt the fuel pump, and drained the carbs and drained and cleaned the fuel cell. I filtered my fuel and put it back in the tank.

When I pulled the filter it had quite a bit of black particulate in it and also in the fuel that drained back form the upper carb. The fuel pump had a large amount of this as well. Not sure where it came from but I hope everything I did will cure the issue......guess I will find out Saturday.
