1996 Mercury 150 EFI, not getting fuel to start or stay running?

I have a 1996 Mercury 150 H.P. EFI that was winterized three years ago and not used since. I have siphoned and replased all fuel, replaced the fuel lines and the primer bulb and spark plugs, but the motor will not start unless I physically spray gasoline and oil mixture into the throttle body, and then it only runs until that fuel is gone. I have great spark, can hear the fuel pump running when ignition is on and I have checked the fuel filters and emptied the water seperator with no change.

Gummed up carbs?? Was fuel left in the carbs for the past 3 years?

Have you tested the EFI circuit? I don't know anything about EFI's. But it sounds like you have compression and spark, and all you need is fuel. Perhaps the is a short in the EFI circuit or corroded wire or loose connection.

Do a search for testing the EFI.

-andy

Check EFI fuel pressure. Merc has had problems with pumps after they sit a while. I actually uncrimped the ends of my fuel pump, pulled it apart, cleaned up the turpentine bb's, and put it back together. Works like a champ. (I only rebuilt it cause it had only 10 hours on the motor). I had the exact same problem.. You can hear the pump kick on, but it is NOT generating enough pressure. I only took the pump apart due to the fact it was over $350.00 for me.....

I will try to check out the EFI circuit and check the pump pressure to see if it's working and get back with the results. Thnks to all, including you too Chris! :)

Also...inside your vapor seperator, there is a final fuel filter on the bottom of the high pressure pump....it could be clogged up.

That engine should have a fuel pressure port on the line,to check fuel pressure w/ a gauge. The pump should hum w/ the key on, & there is a drain plug on the vapor seperator, drain & check the fuel in there. Good Luck, Joe

One more thing, when you replaced, or emptied & cleaned the fuel filters, (especially the water seperator under the cover) does it refill when you prime the ball?

there is a check valve at the vapor canister (I think that is what it is called) and if there is debris holding that check valve open the fuel pressure will not build up. I had this problem with my 1994 150 EFI. However, mine would start but would not run more than 3500 RPM. Good luck! I know how fristrating this can be.
