You have a combination rectifier/regulator. If you are going to do that type work on your motor I highly recommend you get a manual. It will tell you how to check that unit. For a quick check to see if its working, check the voltage at the battery with the motor off, then check it again with the motor running. As RPMs increase, you will see an increase in voltage if all is well. Free info like that on-line is as rare as hen's teeth due to copy right laws. Your local library is a possible source for that info.
