No ignition,
Good strong battery and strong cranking
I unplugged the Black/yellow wire at control box, cranked and still no spark,
unplugged the two yellow wires from stator, cranked and no spark
disconnected the red/white and blue/white and checked for resistance, not sure the reading, but re-installed.
Any online manuals, or does anybody know where i can get the right manual?
Thanks

Unplug the black/yellow at the switchbox on the motor as a short in the wiring harness, lanyard switch, or the tilt switch would still ground that wire and kill spark.

Your s/n comes up as a model:

1040412SD MERCURY 1996 40

Parts Lisitng:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/543.cfm

Service manual P/N: 90-814676

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/814676r1/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

Here's the best test available for 4 cyl mercurys from CDI.

Ok, i came to the shop and decided to take another look; i removed the 2 Black/Yellow wires from the pack and VOILA!!! Lots of nice crisp blue spark at all 4, I am stoked now! Now to find the ground fault, you guys rock!!!
I will do more checking come Monday.
Thanks so much, Audie

I can't seem to find where the grounded ignition is coming from, I get spark on all 4 when the 2 Black/Yellow wires are removed from the engine pack. So I am getting a manual so I will have diagrams to trace and hopefully find this problem.

Bypass the tilt switch, see if that's it.

If the tilt switch is good check your ignition switch.

If the tilt switch is good check your ignition switch.

I have the manual coming; this unit has a trim switch on the starboard side of the engine, plus one has been added on the dash, they both work fine. I don't see a trim limit switch anywhere (or i'm not sure where it would be) there is one Black/Yellow wire that is connected to the pack, it goes straight down and connects to a solid black wire which is connect to ground (I thought this was wrong, so i unplugged it and i get spark) I need the original wiring diagram to find the fault.

***News Flash***
What would cause this freaky incident???

Boat parked outside of building last night, came in to work this morning sitting in same spot, started hearing a noise after being here for a couple hours (sounded like a fan motor or something) I thought it was the guy in the building across from me. I decided to take a closer examination; it was the trim up motor in full auto just a whining!!! I thought "what the hell?" i walked over and just hit the down on the dash and it stopped, weird??? It did rain most of the night, has this ever happened to anyone before?

Ok, it did it again. I disconnected the negative cable, if it does it again; I'm calling ghost busters!

Water in a switch, maybe.

I've had one did the same wierdness, turned out to be where the trim wires flexed inside the control arm, the multi-stranded wires broke some and the ends poked out thru the insulation, once in a while they would touch each other and the drive would come up. Replaced that section of all the wires and she's fine now.

No more 'Ghosts'.

Yeah I figured it was water shorting across the wires at the switch, didn't want it to drain the battery, bet it will return to normal when dries out.
