1996 Mercury 50 HP 4 stk. Tachometer showing 8K at idle???

Just purchased boat with 1996 Merc 4strk 50hp. Tach shows 8000 when idleing. It is definately not idling in the 8K range.

Any ideas?

Check the back of the tach and make sure it is set for 6 pulses. The arrow must be exactly on 6P. Close don't count. If that is all good check your charging circuit.

Set at but now when its off it is stuck on 4k. I think it is bad. Any thoughts?
