1996 Mercury 9.9 oil level question.

Have recently acquired my first outboard motor, and only a share at that. But I have it here at my house now and have it running. Problem is, it smokes like a house-a-fire. I did some checking around and finally found a manual for it and have discovered that the oil level in the crankcase it too high. WAY to high. I have already removed 8oz or so of the oil and it is still above the high mark on the dipstick. So the question is, has something else bad happened to the engine having the oil level that high? Blown seals or ????

Drain it and refill with the proper amount. Then run it to see it if goes up. If it does you are probably getting fuel in the oil for some reason.

I will certainly keep tabs on that, but I don't really think there is fuel in the oil. If there was, wouldn't the oil smell like fuel or change the appearance in any way?? The 22-24 oz I removed doesn't have a fuel smell. Just smelled and looked like oil. One more question, if there was fuel in the oil, would it eventually separate if left sitting? I have some in a sealed plastic water bottle so I can watch it to see if it separates.

Fuel or water would be the only things that could get in, unless someone is playing a joke on you and filling it when your not looking.

I dont think it will seperate, since both are made from the same source.
Yes you should be able to smell it if there was enough fuel in it.

I think what happened with the oil level is that when we got it we had no manual and didn't know what we were doing. We just put in oil in to make sure it had enough. After all, too much is better than not enough. Right?? Now that I have the manual I see that we most likely over-did it. The oil level is now correct, but I will still monitor it just in case.

But the question now is did we hurt it by having too much oil? it was supposed to have 1 liter, but it had over 1.5 liters.

No, not really.
You just cause different problems when its over full.
