1996 mercury force

I'm having problems with my 96 force 40hp that keeps blowing out (exhaust gasket?) ill take it to the shop get it fixed it'll run one trip without any problems, but the next time i take it out ill end up having to limp home with the cowling off the motor because the exhuast fumes build up inside the cowling and rob the engine of air. This has happened to me 5 times now and it always the same thing

And is it always in the same location on the gasket?

im not sure i sent it to the shop to get it fixed in the past. im going to try it on my own this time

I'm wondering if there is a crack or break in one of the covers or spacers, maybe even a small chunk broken out, causing a weak spot.

I had the same thought I guess the only way to know is to tear into it
