Well I did it again, luckily i have a cool wife, brought home 1996 rinker 180 for a great price but minus the outdrive. The engine is an mercruiser 3.0, runs great. So now I need to start hunting for outdrive that will mate up with the 3.0. What should I be looking for? Gears at 1.98? year? anything else i should look out for? Thanks in advance!

here is the tag on the motor

Engine - 0F758851
Drive - 0F720036

Well, the best option is to go with a new outdrive. You can get an aftermarket drive from Sterndrive Engineering - the SE106. Shop around for the best price. You can pick up a complete new drive for around $1,300.

Ayuh,..... A 1991 or newer Alpha 1, Gen.II, in 1.98:1 gear ratio,...
None of the previous Alphas are of any use to ya,....

I agree with Mark, Brand New, at that price is the Only way to go,....

Actually I didn't pay attention to the year - since you need the gen II, you will want the SE116 drive instead.

Re: 1996 Rinker 180 - mercruiser 3.0

thanks fish and bondo,

hmmm, don't think i want to go that route yet (new outdrive). i want to make sure everything else is up to par while in the water before i spend that kind of cash. Actually the PO is suppose to give me the original outdrive but he says its in pieces cause the (upper) gears are all chewed up.

how hard is it to replace the gears? I'm pretty mechanically incline. now i need to find the manual for my engine and outdrive.

thanks again in advance guys.....

Ayuh,.... The factory Manuals are found in Don'S Adults Only section,... just follow the links,...

Just buyin' the required Tools to rebuild yer drive, will set ya back further than just buyin' a brand New SEI drive,...

If you get a new drive from SEI (about $1400) and you keep the maintenance and oil changes going, it will outlast half a dozen 3 litre engines.

If the top gears are chewed up in the old drive, then the lower will, at least, need to be stripped and cleaned, but likely need bearings and gears too... Just not economical... You can't buy the parts to rebuild a drive for the cost of a new SEI...
