I have a 1996 Sea Ray 210 with a 5.7 2 bbl carburator alpha 1 outdrive. Yesterday we were participating in a poker run on the river, while going to the next stop we were following the bigger boats and the waves were pretty bad. While going along at a steady pace my boat lost all engine power and died.Upon inspection of the engine i noticed some oil on top of the intake. When cranking the motor over it sounds as though there was no compression. We got towed back to the marina and put it back in the slip. When we went back there probably 4 to 5 hours later i cranked it over and it started ? I always look at my gauges,it was running at about 170 degrees on the temp gauge, good oil pressure, and it was charging at 14 amps. This happened 1 other time earlier in the summer and after it sat half a day it fired right up again. Not sure what this could be,any help would be great. Thanks

Try replacing ignition fuse. If its the glass style could be corroded and or broken inside the end cap.

If the next time it happens, you'll want to see if you have spark or not coming out of the coil ASAP. That way you'll have a starting point when you start checking things over during the down time frame.

Did you notice if the tachometer was fluctuating before shutdown?

Since you hit a wave, you may have a loose wire connection someplace. For testing purposes, while at home, start the engine and carefully wiggle every wire you can find to see if the engine dies, ETC. ETC.

Good luck.:)

When it happens check for spark if NO spark check (carefully) how hot the coil is. They do get hot from regular running but a bad coil may get much hotter, a marginal coil may just quit.

This is often the reason for poor restart when warm.
