Does this sound like a starter going out? Motor cranks over good and strong and right where you get off the ignition key the starter makes a squeal. I am guessing that it is hanging up just a smidge until the starter gear slips out of the fly wheel.

That is what it sounds like to me. The Bendix drive must not be fully retracting from the ring gear. If you have a starter rebuilder in your area, they can repair your starter for far less money than purchasing a new one or a rebuilt unit off the shelf. Typically, they bench test them, install new bearings, brushes, machine the commutator, replace the solenoid and the Bendix drive.

Yeah that is what i was thinking just thought I would throw a question out to be sure. Man that engine sits way back on this boat. I need a skinny orangutane that is starter bolt smart to help with this one.

Had the starter rebuilt here locally. Had it back the same day. Just put it back on today got sidetracked with hurricane clean up. Starts now with no squeal after engine start👍
Never rebuilt a starter Captain Rick so I thought I would leave that to the starter people.

I had a similar noise with my starter. The aftermarket starter mounting holes were a 1/16" closer than the OEM. Squealing was random, maybe 7 out of 10 times. Shimming the starter out would have solved but I went with OEM and zero noise. Starters making noise as engine starts usually indicate starter to close. starter making noise as you just turn key starter to far from flywheel. Glad you solved it!
