Yes Bruce. I had to let the air out of my tires to clear the transom.

Yea, I’m definitely going to check clearances before hoisting. I did an eye measurement and I think I’m good, but don’t want to find out too late that I won’t make it.

you may want better tools than Harbor Freight..... I went thru 4 of their angle grinders before going back to old faithful..... a 1990 vintage craftsman (re-baged dewalt)

also, read the links in the DIY sticky. specifically 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b

You have to buy the right color tools.. Black tools were junk, I forget the name, but Drill Master I think. The orange tools were good.. Now the rust red tools have replaced the orange tools, but are marginal to ok at best. Now the colors to buy are any of the blue and bright red. Bauer and Hercules are safe buy's. But 20 mins away, even the cheapest would be a safe buy if you bought the extended warranty

You are correct. I had a the black grinder and it quit after about a quarter of grinding. Bought the rust red one to replace if because I did not want to ruin my good grinder and it ran good for the rest and is still going good.

now many videos of the orange tools with smoke should I post.

I went thru 9 of their electric die grinders too with the extended warranty until I go tired of the 30 minute drive. Life is too short for cheap tools that fail. the pic below is 20 seconds after i turned the switch on.

you guys may have luck with them, however the magic smoke spills out of them for me.

the only thing I still buy from HF is some buffing pads for my 7" buffer and the purple HVLP gun as for under $20, its not bad for 2 or 3 sprays before the plastic knobs melt from cleaning them.

From the reading/research I’ve been doing I think the Alpha One requires 2” to 2 1/8”? I’m planning on grinding out the whole transom on the inside after removing the engine, V’ing the crack on the outside, reinforcing with 1708 inside, filling on the outside to level, and gel coating the whole back.

I’ve been watching Archbuilder’s videos on his SeaCast transom and considering that route to rebuild once the repair is done, if the cost of that is too much then Plywood, resin CSM, and 1708. I’ve been lurking and reading as many rebuilds here in the last two weeks as I can find that are close to what I think needs done.

The transom requirements are in the attached image.

SeaCast is great stuff and 100% waterproof and this rot proof. Buddy of mine fixed his rotted motor mounts By removing all the wood and filling them with SeaCast. Just don’t be shocked by the price. The stuffs NOT cheap.

Scotts right, most HF power tools won’t last. But if I have a choice over ruining an HF tool with glass dust of my good tools......I won’t lose a minute of sleep tossing anything HF in the trash. Definitely can’t say that about my Metabo or DeWalt grinders.

From my tool and supply run yesterday. I have a HF sawzall already, just needed some blades for possibly removing the stringers.

Scott, did you have any issues with returning them under the warranty? I have a friend who warned me. He bought an extended warranty when he bought the tool, got home to find it DOA and returned to the store a few days later. He was then told that because he bought the extended warranty, it took the place of the normal 90 day warranty. And replacing it would use that warranty. He would have to buy another warranty on the new tool if he wanted to still have the 1 yr extended warranty.

However, you can buy the extended warranty within 30 days of buying if you return with the receipt. So I plan on starting to use it, and buying the 1 yr at the end of the 30 days instead. If it breaks before that or is DOA, it should be covered anyway.

At least I hope it will work out that way.

Chuck. Thank you! I'm saving this for future reference. I think I'd heard that about the HF tools before, so much less expense WHEN they fail, not IF they fail.

If I can afford the SeaCast, I think it's the route I'll go. Should make selling it to someone else easier on my conscience, and after the work I'm prepared to put in (I've read your rebuild as well as Kcassels, FriscoBoater, MadProps, Archbuilder, and a few more) having a transom that WON'T rot may be worth the $$.

They swapped the tools if they had stock. I had to go back a few times to check inventory. The PITA factor wasnt worth it, so I threw all the HF tools away

You didn't see that when you first looked at the boat?

Soft floor, rotted transom, Everything in between is probably a mess as well. I'm assuming you are in for a full cut & gut?

My favorite boat gutting tools are a sawz-all, a belt sander, and a buffer/polisher w/ a 20 grit floor sand disc. :)

The Stingrays are really nice boats. If you get her fixed up right, you won’t have any problems selling her. The Hulls are pretty quick. They’re a fun and stylish boat.

Wood transoms will not get wet and therefore shouldn’t rot if built properly and taken care of. It was really hard for me to justify the cost of the SeaCast considering the old plywood transom lasted 30 years and was not constructed as well as mine. Your choice, like I said the SeaCast is a really great product. You just better be on your game when you mix it together. It sets up very quickly. Their product support is fantastic as they’ll help you along and make sure you order what you need. It’s a great small business to work with.

Yea, still debating all that. Doing some calculations.

One question, where is a decent place to get they PPE suits? I've looked at a few sources, but I thought I would see if there was any advice here.

You can get cheap ones from Harbor Freight, but they won’t last longer that one or two uses. I got the genuine DuPont Tivek suits from Home Depot. They are pricey, but well worth the cost. I would also guess you can buy them on EBay, or Amazon. In the ones I’ve tried, DuPont is the best.

Interesting, I've looked on the HF site. I don't see that they sell them. Although I doubt I would buy them there. I'll look at HD next time I'm there.

They are hard to find right now. If you have a sherwin Williams around you they had some for 10 bucks but did not have a hood or elastic around the wrists. I bought one then threw it to the side. I ended up using regular coveralls with my wife's hair ties around my wrist and a gator neck pulled up over my head and neck. Not the best way but it kept most of the dust off of me.

Huh, maybe they stopped selling them. They weren’t all that great anyway. They didn’t hold up well. About as thin as one of those paper gowns you wear at the hospital, lol.

Well, after brakes on the car and the truck, prep for state inspections. I finally got some time for boat repairs and build a stand, and removed the stern drive. Getting a chain hoist to remove the engine hopefully later this week.

I do have a Sherwin Williams nearby! I may have to stop by there tomorrow and see what they have. HD doesn't seem to have any within 75 miles of me, and they won't ship them.

I bought a Tyvek suit of Amazon this past week. Not the cheapest ($18), but I'm going to try to make it last a few sessions.
