Hello,

I just found this forum again. Seems I registered some time ago.

I posted this question on another forum, and several forum members pointed me here. I had forgotten there wasa forum just for us Yamaha people. I hope somebody can shed some light on my problem. Here goes...

Last year I went through a host of issues with my 1996 Saltwater SeriesII carbed outboard.

In the end, after rebuilding the carbs I was back on the water with no issues. I probably put 50-60 hours on the engine since then. I winterized the motor in the late fall by fogging the ports and adding fuel stabilizer to the tank. At that time I replaced the primer bulb, the fuel filter (went to a racor with drainable bowl), replaced the fuel tank pickup and several fuel line hoses, and I also replaced both fuel pumps.

This spring I swapped the fuel filter (with Raycor bowl) and was on my way again. Or so I thought. Last night an issue presented itself, slightly different than last year.

The engine will not idle, and stalls at low speeds. To get on plane you have to advance the throttle while giving it a couple of flicks of the choke switch. Without choke, the engine will not climb RPMs while in gear. It will rev freely in neutral, but under load there is a lack of power and it will stall out. By giving it a couple of shots of choke and full throttle it will get up on plane. It will stay on plane with no noticable issues above 3000 rpm. Slow speeds and idle speeds are tough. It will stall out, and you can feel a vibration. Getting it back on the trailer was a nightmare because it must have stalled 15 times.

If this was a chainsaw, I would say the low speed jets are the issue. Is there an equivalent set of jets on these carbs that I could just clean, or do I have to order carb kits and rebuild again? If I can service these carbs while they are still mounted on the outboard, that would be great.

The primer bulb stays hard, so I don't think its a fuel delivery issue. The primer bulb and most of the fuel lines and fuel tank pickup were addressed last year.

I have heard that I should be using a 10 micron filter. How do I know which one I have?

I look forward to any comments.
